Trim selvages of fabric and cut fabric into 1 1/2-inch lengthwise strips. Join strips end to end, to make a continuous strip. Machine sew ends (I lay my strips across each other and zigzag diagonally, then cut close to the stitches to eliminate bulk). Roll the strips into balls. It is easier to have several balls then you can sew them together when you come to the end of one.
Work with a relaxed, easy tension. This is important to keep material from wanting to roll instead of staying flat. You don't have to worry about keeping fabric strips flat; let them twist and fold naturally (I prefer to fold mine so there are no loose threads, safer for the animals).
Ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. (Ch 2 at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. Mark for beginning of each round)
Rnd. 1: Ch 2, 8 sc in ring; sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 2: Ch 2, 2 sc in each st around (16 sts) sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 3: Ch 2, 1 sc in next st, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * around, end with 1 sc in each of last 2 sts; sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 4: Ch 2, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * around(32 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 5: Ch 2, sc in each st around, sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 6: Ch 2, work rnd in sc, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced around (40 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 7-8: Ch 2, sc in each st around (40 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 9: Ch 2, work rnd in sc, increasing 10 sts evenly spaced around (50 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 10: Ch 2, work rnd in sc, increasing 11 sts evenly spaced around (61 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 11: Ch 2, sc in each st around; sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Since that this pattern is worked only in sc and begins each round with 2 sc and ends with sl st in top of ch 2, I will simplify it by only telling how many increases in each round and how many sts it equals. I will also say if it is just a round that needs no increase. This pattern when worked to 27 rounds equals about 34-inch diameter. You may work it to any size and fasten off and weave in loose ends.
Rnd. 12: Increase 7 sts evenly (68 sts).
Rnd. 13: Sc in each st around (68 sts).
Rnd. 14: Increase 10 sts evenly (78 sts).
Rnd. 15-16: Sc in each st around (78 sts).
Rnd. 17: Increase 10 sts evenly (88 sts).
Rnd. 18-19: Sc in each st around (88 sts).
Rnd. 20: Increase 10 sts evenly (98 sts).
Rnd. 21: Sc in each st around (98 sts).
Rnd. 22: Ch 2, *work 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from *around(130 sts); sl st to top of beginning ch 2.
Rnd. 23-27: Sc in each st around (130 sts).
